Florida veteran, 72, shot while defending protected sea turtle nest

“He gets down on one knee and he says,

‘Are you all right?’

and

I looked at him and said,

‘Sir, you just shot me! How can I be all right?’ ”

According to CBS Miami, Michael McAuliffe allegedly approached Stanley Pannanman, a 72-year-old Vietnam veteran who was volunteering with Sea Turtle Overnight Protection.

The Associated Press reported that McAuliffe pulled stakes from around a protected nest because “he did not like sea turtles.

” Pannanman told CBS Miami that McAuliffe started shouting profanity and rushed Pannanman, who pulled out his gun.

McAuliffe responded by taking the gun away from Pannanman and hitting him with it. McAuliffe then shot the victim in the waist, Pannanman said.
